At present the treatment of a stricture or malformation of the urethra requires the transplantation of patient’s oral mucosa into his urethra. For this method, the removal of oral mucosa of up to 20 cm is required. The excision of patient’s oral mucosa is painful and is associated with multiple complications, such as oral cicatrizations, injuries of the salivary gland opening, senso-motoric disorders and hence problems with speaking, eating, drinking, limited mouth opening. In addition, the removal of oral mucosa for the reconstruction of the urethra is a second additional operative intervention, which prolongs the operation and anesthesia time.

The advantage of the use of MukoCell® is, that the extensive removal of oral mucosa from patient’s mouth is avoided, the operation procedure is shorter and the associated complications are prevented. In fact, the diseased or malformed urethral tissue can be replaced easily by MukoCell®, which provides new healthy and functioning tissue. Further advantages of MukoCell® are resistance against urine, mechanical stability, plasticity in form and shape, appropriatness for defects of up to 20 cm long, GMP manufacturing, flexible scheduling for transplantation, delivery throughout Europe, implantation 3 weeks after biopsy taking.

MukoCell® represents therefore an essential innovation with a great medical need in the treatment of narrowed or malformed urethra.
